Mistwalker seems to be pro-DS, which we guess means they like money. Not only are they bringing us ASH, which looks not completely terrible, but now it seems that they will be sending us Blue Dragon, the title that encouraged Japanese gamers to buy an Xbox 360. We smell a special edition DS Lite in the works for this one. After all, they have to try to drive system sales again somehow. (more).

Yamaha hosted an event last night in the heart of London’s Soho district to celebrate their official launch in the UK of what’s been described as a "revolutionary hands-on instrument that seamlessly fuses lights, sounds and music". The TENORI-ON is a unique handheld performance controller designed by Toshio Iwai, an established interactive media artist and designer, that has taken a full six years to go from initial concept to final production. Its basic makeup is a 16×16 matrix of LED buttons that not only provide the control interface to its 16 layers, 256 preset tones, and 6 sequence/loop modes, but also displays in lights what is often a stunning visual feedback loop on whatever is being output by the device. The device is planned only to be sold in the UK presently with a list price of £599 (approx. $1200 USD)

Woodblock graffiti is a type of graffiti that originated in Chicago in 2007 as a direct reaction to the resources of the Chicago Graffiti Blasters. The style will (usually) use a small portion of plywood or some other such cheap material and use up to two bolts (bent at the back to prevent removal), to display art or some other such message, on common street signs.

Let's hope we here in America don't have to resort to this entirely anytime soon...

Touchscreen Boombox

This looks like a vintage Hitachi boombox, right? Look closer; the cassette door and VU meters are actually displayed on a vertically mounted LCD. Inside lurks a Fujitsu Stylistic Color Tablet PC running Windows 98 (the final version will be Linux/Windows dual-boot). This little beastie even integrates a webcam and WiFi (802.11b). The keyboard and port connectors are awkwardly hidden at the bottom of the unit, but it works just fine on its back or tilted at an angle.

Best of all, the Boombox still functions (sans cassette, of course). The audio out of the tablet PC is routed through the amp and speakers, making this a great on-the-road mp3 player.

When a local household in San Jose decides its share its wireless network with neighbours and other strangers, the house members do not know what to expect. Few curious passersby stop by to see what would happen next. There is a rumour that somewhere else, at the other end of town, another household with a yellow chair is doing the same thing. What was going on? The rumour mill worked overtime, as people wondered why anyone would want to sit on a yellow chair to access a wireless network. But for those who sat on the chair, they knew it was a unique experience and a lot of fun. They had been ‘invited’ to enter personal networks, share music and movies and shout across town about war and politics if they so wished. They felt like cyber voyeurs, entering unknown territories, grabbing and dropping files across the neighbourhood, across the city, over a cup of coffee.

The project is all about how domestic wireless networks can be built upon to create a lively community space.

DJ HIROSHI WATANABE performed a demo of the new style DJing using the VCI at the Shibuya store on April 30th to mark the release.

The setup was kept simple, only using the VCI-100, a laptop(Powerbook) and a mini audio interface. Despite the simplicity of the setup, the sound was magnificent and exciting, stopping the steps of people walking by during the half hour performance.
DJ HIROSHI WATANABE showed his skills as a pro and played effects in his unique and intuitive way, thanks to the stressless layout and operability of the VCI-100.

Nanovoice was developed just to demo the possibility of sampled audio playback in stereo on an oldschool dot matrix Game Boy. It lacks any advanced editing features and could, unlike nanoloop, hardly serve as standalone tool for music creation. It may, however, be used in combination with other sound sources (can sync timing with nanoloop via link cable or midi devices via midi sync cable) to add some dirty 4-bit flavour to your setup. Furthermore it can generate nice, smooth bass pads when played through a lowpass filter.

"Audio Bombing", devolped by ike Fleming, Kang Chang and Kyle Millns from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, looks to be a promising new art medium/movement. Here's how it works: you record audio on a cassete tape, cut the strip of tape you recorded on, and stick it anywhere in an urban environment. You (as well as other taggers), can listen to it by running the playhead from a tape-player accross the lenghth of the magnetic strip.

Keep an eye out for black lines pasted on your local coffee shop.
